How it works

Every node loses some CPU and memory to the kubelet, the container runtime and the eviction threshold before any pod is scheduled. The managed services use different rules — EKS reserves memory per possible pod (11 MiB × max pods + 255 MiB), GKE 1.37+ switched to 15 MiB × max pods + 500 MiB, AKS 1.29+ to 20 MB × max pods + 50 MB (capped at 25% of RAM). Small nodes lose a large share; pod limits (max pods, ENI IPs on EKS) often bind before CPU or memory. Details and sources: formulas.
